Simple Pleasures

Tuesday, September 1, 2009
Well, after a few days of complete house dismantling, our carpet project is complete and COMPLETELY rewarding! It is so nice to be able to be on the floor and not get instant rug burns and not see the pattern that we walk so many times a day OR stains from us or previous owners.

Because the workers were here until 6:30pm Monday, it was a bit of a race to get the kids' rooms in sleep-able shape. As part of this project, the kids were told they can choose to rearrange their rooms how they wanted. They both did a great job of doing so and were SO excited about their "new" spaces. They both asked each other in the morning if they slept well in their "new" rooms and tonight when they got into bed, Will said, "My bed is SO comfy now." (Clarification: no modifications have been made to his bed.) Rich and I have just so been enjoying their appreciation for this household upgrade. It reminds me that among the many other values I'd like to instill in them is the value of enjoyment of life's simple pleasures.

That is so exciting - can't wait to see it!! I think you and Rich obviously have instilled the simple pleasures in them. Steve and I have always commented how yours and Sarahs kids can come over and play with no toys here for hours (i.e. flying as airplaines with extra trim or playing elevator in our bathroom water closet!) It takes an imagination to create these simple pleasures. Remember when mom and dad were getting carpet or new carpet in the family room and they let us rollerskate in there on the plywood? I thought I was so spoiled my parents let us rollerblade in the house! We definitely had great models for this lesson!!

I agree with Jamie - I was so amazed at your children's ability to play with little or no toys. They are great at entertaining themselves and each other. Instilling the simple pleasures is one of the best lessons you can teach them. The less reliant they are on "stuff", the better off they are and will be.

I'm so happy to hear that the new carpet is in! There is nothing better than a newly-arranged room. It's like an adventure (and apparently makes nice, comfy beds!)

it sounds like you're doing a good job and that your kids already do enjoy life's simple pleasures.

Simple pleasures. Like having a million washcloths, one of lifes cheap luxuries.

Your kids definantly have some imaginations. Hopefully Elevyn's the same.
