Needed: Garage Sale

Tuesday, September 15, 2009
My sister and I have a mega garage sale planned for Spring '10. I could use it sooner. I was trying to organize a few things and had a brief panic attack about all the STUFF we have. And it's not junk. It's useful stuff, just not by us anymore. I'm going to maintain my nerves until that beautiful spring weekend when we rid ourselves of this stuff. But until then....

I've been doing some research about donating. Truly, I would like to do that as much as possible with the many items I have. I have searched local shelters, halfway houses, and other charities to look for their "needed items." Rarely is what I have on their list of needs. (What? You don't need a talking princess vanity? Sheesh!)

I am particularly in need of a place for stuffed animals of all types in great condition. Appoximately a dump truck full. Turns out NOBODY wants those. I did find two non-local places that may. In some states they have "Night Night" bags they give to homeless children that include a blanket, a stuffed animal and an age-appropriate book. Also, many police and fire departments take new-like stuffed animals to have in order to give to kids who have had a traumatic experience. Our armed forces take donations for the kids in Iraq as well. Does anyone else know of places that will take stuffed animals?

While I'm asking for help, I am looking to solve this crime:

WANTED: a skull-less skeleton who ate half of my candy corns.

PS - forgot to comment last time - that wine rack is amazing!

Oh Karen, that picture absolutely cracked me up!! How funny!! I don't believe candy corn has milk in it, does it? Isn't it just a mixture of corn syrup and other sticky sweet stuff? Anyway, as to the stuffed animals, I feel your pain. I have bags and bags of them and wonder the same thing. There is a website, SAFE (stuffedanimalsforemergencies.org) that may be helpful. Also, children's hospitals, dat care centers, etc. There may be some rules regarding "used" stuffed toys due to allergens, etc. Have you asked at Will's pre-school? They may have some suggestions also. Good luck!! Any chance of my putting some things in your garage sale next spring if I promise to be there to help out??

So my sister and I did a garage sale this summer and we put all of our stuffed animals in ..ummmm, 4 bins labelled "free"....and this woman came and asked if she could take them ALL to bring to the nursing home where she works...this sounds so sad, but she said that alot of elderly living on their own like to cuddle with stuffed animals. It nearly broke my heart to hear this, but at the same time, was very happy they these stuffed animals would get used and loved again!!
