Tonight was a preview night for the school where Paige will be attending 1st grade starting Wednesday. While I should be pumped with excitement and anxiousness for this school-happy girl, I have a pit in my stomach due to what I feel is extremely poor planning on our school district's part.
I am aware that many things throughout my kids' school years will get my feathers in a ruffle. For this reason, I am trying to pick my battles and take things with a grain of salt. When I found out last spring that Paige would be attending this school (which is a brand new facility and quite nice), I thought surely the logic would surface and I would agree with this decision.
Tonight we drove .7 miles down the road past another elementary school to see other parents and their kids walking to preview night at that school. Four traffic lights and 12 minutes later we arrived at Paige's school down a poorly paved country road not at all meant to handle the traffic of an elementary school. Never mind that there are 3 other elementary schools that are shorter driving distances than that one - two of which would require driving through NO traffic lights. Never mind that a road just off of our subdivision could be continued to allow us to get to this same school in closer to 3 minutes. Never mind that close to 80% of our taxes go towards these public schools that became so overzealous with rapid growth that they were caught in this situation where the logic I was searching for earlier is simply not there - and they were too proud, I can only assume, to reexamine things from a different perspective when the economic downturn began.
That leaves us in a situation where we need to bear with instead of be proud of this district that was a large part of why we moved here 4 1/2 years ago. I have yet to write a letter and now feel it would be in vain. Instead, I'm wondering if there is an open place on the school board. I don't represent a big business or financial success, but perhaps I can represent a touch of common sense.

do it, karen!
this has to be SO frustrating.
I say go for it. RUN for it, if you have to. The public school system in general is experiencing an extreme breakdown in the connection between operation and common sense. I have friends who were teachers in West Aurora School District for 40+ years, and even they don't have anything nice to say about it and, in fact, have pulled their grandchildren OUT. The world could use a little of your common sense. Go git 'em. :)
i think that's a great idea. do it.
Go for it Karen! I certainly think you would have alot of people in your corner!!
SERIOUSLY.....DO IT!
