Not What it Used to Be

Perhaps I'm thinking of when I was a bit older, but I remember school supply shopping to be a fun escapade of possibilities. Do I want the pink erasers or the green? The Gremlins folder, or unicorns and rainbows? Three ring binder or Trapper Keeper? Metal pencil box or cardboard?

Now, a 1st grader's list is as long as my arm, and not because it is so much stuff (although it kind of is) but because so much text is needed to explain EXACTLY what is needed. Not just 4 folders, but 4 plastic folders with pockets, 3-holes, and in certain colors. Dry erase markers, in certain colors, low odor, chisel tip. Seriously! I tried my best to make it exciting for Paige (and I think she thought it was) but I really wanted to tell her I thought she should be able to pick out a HSM folder if she wanted!!!

She did get freedom of choice for her backpack. I'm SO IMPRESSED with her choice! It is dark pink and brown patterned - SO CUTE and not a TV character on it! She spotted it right away and asked what I thought. Here is what she heard, "I think it is really cute - be sure to check out others before you decide for sure." Here is what was in my head, "Don't look at any others! It's great! Get it! Get it!" Will choose a wicked cool Lightning McQueen one. I don't mind - anything to get him on board for preschool.

In other news, Cole was running a fever today. I realized this while school supply shopping. He wanted nothing but to lay his head on my shoulder. This was okay with me. The big kids manned the shopping cart and we snuggled. He continues to be hot tonight and I pray he sleeps well and it doesn't escalate to a full-blown flu that I know he was exposed to. (Hope you're feeling better, Jamie, but really, who passes the flu bug around in July!) :)

Paige's backpack sounds great! And glad Will got into it as well!!
I am SOOO sorry about Cole - I had no idea on Sunday when I was with everyone - but it truly was only 24 hours of nasty, then pretty much back to normal - hope the same is true for him :)

I hope Cole is feeling better. 6 out of 8 people in our Chicago office were out for two days in a row last week due to that flu bug and I said the same thing: "The flu? In JULY??"

i was surprised w/ kenny's kindergarten list too. it doesn't sound like his is quite that specific (yet) but it still made it harder to find some stuff.
i hope cole is feeling better today.

My friend at work shopped for school supplies with her grandkids too. She was amazed at the list, as well as the mandatory colors, etc. She was particularly upset about the various colored dry erase markers, saying "you know...they're not for the kids. The teachers use them on the boards." I sincerely hope she's not right about that! There was nothing more fun when I was little but shopping for school supplies (unless it was new clothes and shoes!!) Don't know how my parents did it with 5 kids!!!!!

Seriously, these schools are getting alittle over-the-top. I loved picking out folders and trapper keepers....and then you could match up your least favorite subject with the least favorite folder! Glad she had fun picking out a backpack. I don't remember that, but I DO remember picking out a lunchbox....fav being strawberry shortcake. :)
