Discipline Update

Tuesday, March 3, 2009
It has been almost a week since I began this new discipline tactic. So far I would say that I am definitely happy with the results. The household has been quite harmonious and the kids maintain excitement about the whole thing. What I like is that there is no longer wasted breath on how someone is being naughty, please don't do that, etc. Now it is simply, "that will get a ticket taken away." They know what I mean.

So, in this past 6 days or so, Will has had one day without getting a prize (this included a temper fit leaving cousin Riley's house too early for his taste) and Paige has had 2 days without prizes. One time was due to self-administering her asthma inhaler to herself (the puffer has a counter on it and I knew what number we were on...so busted) and another time for ignoring her dad's questions due to a pouting session. They love prize time in the evening and there has NEVER been an argument if one is not receiving one. They just accept it and move on.

The tough one is keeping enough interesting things in the prize basket (for very few dollars) that continues to make it alluring to them. Okay, that part is actually kind of fun. :)

I'm so glad this is working out for you! Maybe to up the ante a little bit and add a little extra incentive, you could start a new bucket for no ticket loss for a whole week - coupons for "movie night with Dad" or "ice cream date with Mom" for an extra special treat. What do you think? The better the behavior, the better the prize? Even though I do believe that good behavior (like good grades) is its own reward, it can't hurt to sweeten the pot a little bit! :)

Hey - do you know about the website for Oriental Trading Company? Kinda cheap stuff but perfect for a reward bucket
