Little Rituals

Thursday, February 5, 2009
I have realized recently that there are little rituals that I (and Rich for that matter) do with the kids that are somewhat meaningless, but without fail we do over and over again. And it doesn't get old. Here are examples for each of the big kids.

PAIGE: When I read to her at night, I wait in her bed while she picks out a book in her cabinet. Then she covers it all up and I'm supposed to guess which of the gazillion books she chose. I just throw a title out there and she always says, "How did you know?" even though I'm never right. Not sure why we do it, but we always do.

WILL: When he gets out of the tub he always asks for smooth hair. So, in my best French accent, I always work at it and work at it telling him all the while that I'm sure he will be happy with this new fab look (as I'm spiking it as spikey as I can get it). Then I tell him to check it out in the mirror and he always squeals, "Noooooo, I said SMOOTH, dis is spiked!" Not sure why we do it, but we always do!

I witnessed this when I babysat - thought Paige was just stalling again but called me back in to say I forgot to do what her and daddy do as I closed the door - I had to blow a kiss and catch hers - that's all she wanted but you could tell she needed that little routine as I left the room. These rituals speak volumes to your parenting and ability to provide the consistency kids crave!

Dear Will:

I have the same problem with my French hairstylist. They never listen.

Love, Laurie
