Cole Update

Tuesday, February 16, 2010
About a year ago at this time I was posting many blogs about Cole's allergies and testing and precautions and restrictions. Now, with a year of experience under our belts and a year of growing under Cole's, I'm happy to report that we are definitely doing well in that department.

We only had a few mishaps in that year where foods were fed to him accidentally that contained milk and he had reactions. He also had a tough time any time he had a cold. Now we are starting to break free from our total abstinence of all things that contain even the most remote amount of milk or milk derivative and experiment a little.

Here are new foods that have now been deemed safe (sorry for the boredom, this is more for my documentation than reader enjoyment):
Margarines
Hidden Valley Ranch (an accident that had no repercussions)
Certain dark chocolate and semi sweet chocolate
Doughnuts
Movie theatre-style popcorn
Bread crumbs made with milk (also a mistake that had no ill effects)

The next step is to have further testing with his allergist and continue slowly "experimenting" in controlled environments with certain foods. My next foods might be crackers with milk such as orignal Goldfish crackers, and then cakes / cookies that contain milk components. Actual dairy products (such as cheese / cheese products, yogurt, milk) will definitely be held off for a while.

This, combined with his wonderful demeanor and personality lately, has us in a completely different position than a year ago at this time. Yay, Cole!
