Tonight the kids were having a little juice before bed and Will had asked me if he could have a "swig" more as I was finishing changing Cole. I said "I doubt it." In my head, that was 'no' and so I called them to head upstairs. Will didn't move.
Me: C'mon Will. What are you waiting for?
Will: Well, sometimes 'doubt' means yes and no.
Me: Ooooh...you're exactly right. Except this time it was no.
Clarification: For me, 'doubt it' means no with a slight chance of yes. 'Maybe' means yes, unless you mess it up for yourself.

yay! i can finally comment again!
i'm with your clarification of "doubt it." in our house, "we'll see" is the one that the kids get hung up on sometimes. now, if i say that, bennett says, "she means no." and he's usually right. in fact, years and years ago, i started regularly using a phrase with matt: "we'll see means no." we've never said it in front of the boys and they've already figured it out.
You sound like my mom. When we were little, if we messed it up for ourselves she'd say, "Well I was GOING to take you for ice cream but..." It used to make me so mad!!
"We'll see" SOOOOOOOO means no!! This post made me laugh out loud. We're such...moms. :)
