A while ago my parents boasted about a new place they had found to hike very near home that they wanted to take the kids to. This afternoon we all went to this forest preserve and hiked, followed by a cookout. It was a blast for the kids. My dad made a comment about how much they learned. It's true - and we're not talking about the kind of learning you can do from a book...
1. How to navigate their way through the woods
2. How to collect wood for a fire
3. How to watch their footing in heavy brush (okay, still need a little work here)
4. Different wildlife that make their homes in the forest
5. How to hunt for and find arrowheads (okay, those were planted by grandpa - but good practice)
6. How to put out a fire
7. How to pump and use a water pump
And more. I used to love hiking as a kid. And now I love seeing my kids enjoy it. It's funny - we can have all the technology, fancy places, cool toys in the world, but when it comes down to it, we can't compete with just plain nature.

Remember when we could cross Plainfield road and we'd go down Collins to the "creek" - I think it was just a storm drain under the road - but we acted like we were oh so adventerous!! I bet you guys had a blast today!!!
Gary is the arrowhead master!! I think he gave your dad some once.
It's good your kids enjoy things like the great outdoors. I don't know how kids ever survived before technology.
This sounds like a perfect way to spend a day. My dad used to take us to the forest preserve for hiking, too. That was where we learned that girls, too, can pee in the woods. Gross.
How cool that grandpa planted arrow heads - that's cute!! Nature IS the coolest!! Our neighbors were bug hunting tonight and my boys thought that was like the best thing they've ever seen. Were they using those fancy bug vacuums?? No!! they were using plastic cups -awesome!!!
