It is no secret that Paige is an animal lover. She has logged WAY more hours caring for stuffed animals than for babies and if you give her something with a REAL heartbeat, she very well may love it to death. She has had worms as pets, spent hours (over)feeding my dad's chickens last season, transformed a chair in her room to Milo's bed, chose horseback riding as one of her summer classes and would do anything for her very own pet like a hamster, bunny, little white mouse...ANYTHING!
So news of my grandparent's 16 year old Yorky dying last week was very hard for her to grasp and get over. I think she did quite well, though. She put a card out on the back patio for Holly (the dog) to come get (after all, she's an angel now, so she can fly down and get it). When I asked her what the card said she said, "I love you Holly. Thanks for being in my soul." So deep and sensitive.
But, lifting her spirits were the events of today. My parents and Paige caught 2 toads and made a box with a screen top and EVERYTHING for Paige to keep them in. Each toad has been re-named at least 3 times. Our dinner conversation revolved around the toads and the after dinner activities included catching bugs for the toads.
I told her that this was fun, but that maybe a box isn't the greatest home for the toads, so maybe tomorrow we'll go down to the creek and let them go. She understood, pushing me back to maybe the day AFTER tomorrow. Then a few minutes later she states, "Mom, I just opened the lid to the box and they didn't even try to jump out. I think they like it there. I think they know I'm their mom now." Yeah, they're not going in the creek. Ever.
