Today after getting Cole's picture taken for the paper (1 year baby faces), we had some time to kill before lunch. The big kids and I made some muffins, but that didn't quench Paige's desire to make something "special." She is hilarious. She loves watching the Food Network mostly because she has a thing for plate presentation, garnishing, etc. Believe it or not, I actually took a class that taught about the importance of plate presentation, garnishing, etc. I don't use it day to day because I don't often entertain Martha Stewart and because I barely have enough time to chew my food before swallowing at mealtime, let alone sprinkle each plate with a dash of this or a sprig of that.
So, lately I've been trying to think of ways that I can incorporate Paige helping me put together a meal or a dessert. For example, she was in charge of sprinkling each serving of a pasta dish with parsley one night. What I try to get away from is the free-for-all with food that leads to wasted food. So today I had some leftover frosting. I let the kids frost mini vanilla wafers and then "garnish" them with whatever sprinkles / chips they wanted. They then put them in little foil wrappers and here is what we have:

They stood at the counter and did this for an hour and were so proud of the finished product! We had some for dessert after dinner and Will said, "These are yummier than peanut butter and jelly inside bread." Now that's pretty good.

that is such a cute idea. we may be doing this soon.
i'm feeling like that super-crappy mom who never does anything with her kids.
tomorrow, i WILL be fun mommy and do something cool like this! thanks for the kick in the butt.
Too cute! I knew when they worked on the Thanksgiving cookies here that we had budding pastry chefs in our midst:)
Those look delicious, as well as beautifully presented. Just please tell Paige that she is not allowed to be as annoying as Rachael Ray! Or Paula Deen!
If they are better than PB&J inside bread, I'm comin' over for dessert! :)
Vanilla Wafers drenched in frosting!!! Isn't that a dietician's worst nightmare?
Haha.
Upon further reflection, I'm thinking Paige has a future with the Martha Stewart enterprise as a food stylist. She can be one of those people who rubs just the right amount of shoe polish on a raw turkey to give it that roasted finish.
You may not find that as funny as I did. I was crying when picturing it. I'm easily amused.
Wow - I'm so impressed with the results! Those look awesome (and I'm sure they were quite tasty as well)! AND it killed an entire hour?! Bravo mom...bravo!
