My reality check

I know I've done my share of complaining about certain traits the kids have. Like how dressing Will is like trying to dress the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. Or how Paige doesn't have a filter for what the check out person at Walgreens needs to know about our family, for example. But the truth is that the minute my kids get sick - I start the countdown until they go back to their quirky selves.

Today Cole woke up with an all-over body rash. While he's still managing to be smiley, you just know he isn't himself. And after seeing Will as uncomfortable as he was with nausea and vomitting, I'll take his hundred pieces of scribbled-on paper and paper clippings all over the floor that drive me nuts anyday. And Paige was especially tired this evening and is having some GI problems as well and actually said she doesn't feel like going to her Halloween parade at school tomorrow! Paige? Who picked her costume out around the idea of wearing it in the parade?

When your child is sick it doesn't take long to rearrange the priority list in the correct order. And it doesn't take long for you to realize there is nothing better than a healthy, happy child.

Kelly had a 104 degree fever one Thanksgiving (1996, to be exact. I remember because it was the last time I saw Linda) and I remember getting her all medicated and then sitting there on her bed and staring at her. Just staring. Watching. Waiting for her to stir so I could ask how she was feeling. It's amazing that when we are sick, we still manage to get up and do what needs to be done. When our kids get sick, it seems that the only logical solution is to leap across a few days on the calendar to when they wake up and say "Mommy, I feel better." There are no words mommies would rather hear! I hope everyone is well soon. Love you!
